Politics

We’ve all been there…It’s our first day, we sit down and get chatting to someone at work and we think “wow, they are all so friendly”. Then the next day bad news: someone else sits you down and tells you that that person who you thought would one day be a good friend is actually a NIGHTMARISH DISASTER of a person…and you should steer clear!

Here are a few tips and bits of advice to help you along in the strange world of office politics:

1) Never get involved in a clique until you’ve assessed what they are like: rather than just jumping straight in and then finding out they’re not liked by anyone when it’s TOO LATE, why not hold back? You’re in no rush, and remember, you may have been wrong about things like this before.

2) Don’t eat lunch on your own: the quickest way to ensure you are hated by everyone – or just someone – is to set yourself apart. A really bad idea this one. Eat with the others and you will also learn who you can trust.

3) Don’t work too hard too soon: do this and you’ll look like a push over. Others will give you their work, and before long you’ll be seen as the weakling in the corner who will do everyone else’s work while they have a drink down the pub.

4) Always speak up for yourself in the first few days: whether it’s a debate about the ethics of horse insurance , or something lighter, fighting your corner will make you look like someone who shouldn’t be messed with.

5) DON’T GO MAKING EVERYONE COFFEE ON THE FIRST DAY: do this and you will forever be associated with the worst role there is…and believe me when I say you don’t want that.
